Communication Skills

It is necessary to teach people how to speak with you. The type of language another person uses towards you, their body language, and their tone matters when it comes to having an effective conversation. How do you speak with God? How does God ask you to speak to Him?

I remember when I first started talking with God after I turned to Him for help. I was livid. He had become the blame of every issue I had. He did not deserve it, but He still listened. He listened to every hurt, minor inconvenience, and happy moment. Even when my brain was screaming so loud that I could not hear beyond it, He heard me.

BUT… as it is often said, if you know better, you do better.

After learning more about God and Him teaching me how He wants to be spoken to, I changed my methods.

When did people start talking with God?

From the beginning, God wanted a relationship with the people that He created. God spoke directly to Adam and Eve in the garden and the Bible states in Genesis 4:26

26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.

At that time people began to call on[i] the name of the Lord.”

Genesis 4:26

There are a several passages in the Bible that explain how you should talk with God.

First, when I start my day and before reading the Bible, I pray this prayer.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b]

Matthew 6:5-13

Second, I thank God for a new day and His mercy and grace. Even if His mercy and grace is all I have for that day, I have been blessed abundantly. I do not deserve anything from Him, but He provides everything.

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

Lastly, I do not give up on praying. I speak to Him throughout the day because my issues do not have a set timer for only the mornings. Things will happen all throughout my day. I need God in those situations, and God also WANTS to be included in those situations. I praise God for all the amazing things I get to witness. God and I are on this journey together.

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

He understands you that may not know what to say. It is completely okay to not know because God has already provided a way to help you with this issue. You do not have to be nervous starting your conversations with Him.

“26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

Romans 8:26

God provided us His Spirit and it is an intercessor for us! God thinks of everything. I am always humbled by His love for us.

Just start praying. He loves you. I love you. If you have any questions, reach out!
